"Hands in the Air" By Precious Mashaya in Springstone 42cm
A talented young artist, Precious Mashaya was born into a family of sculptors. His mother’s uncle, Moses Mashaya, was one of Zimbabwe’s great early sculptors. However, it was his older brother, Passmore, also a well-renowned master sculptor, who played a significant role in influencing him, along with his brothers Tinei, Cephas, Givemore, and Norest in this direction.
Passmore now owns his own workshop and gallery in Harare where he continues to train other members of his family, including his wife who has recently taken up carving as a profession. Their cousin, Tonderai Nyagato, also works with them at the gallery.
Working as a team, the stone sculptures of the Mashaya family are often taken on exhibition. One such event was the display at the Inter Cultural Centre Gallery in Sonoma, California during the month of February, 2004 in an exhibit entitled, Transitions. Precious himself has participated in various exhibitions throughout Zimbabwe and his artwork has been purchased abroad by art collectors from around the world.
