Shona Sculpture
Andamiyo Chihota was born in Chitungwiza on the 22nd of June 1976. He did his primary and secondary education in Guruve. Andamiyo started carving small sculptures as a past time, this included birds, ball heads, and animals. These sold very well. Later he visited the Tengenenge Art Community and was inspired to do more art. After school he successfully got into Art when he was staying with his cousin Edronce Rukodzi. Through inspiration from Edronce, Andamiyo became a full time sculptor and later introduced himself at the Tengenenge Art Community where he secured a stand to display his sculptures. The decorated eyes highlight the originality of Andamiyo’s work. Andamiyo’s works are exhibited in countries such as Holland, Germany, Belgium, Britain, and USA just to mention a few. Andamiyo held a group exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts, Auditorium Institute of Art San Diego USA. His art improved in recent years when Edronce secured places overseas for Andamiyo to sell his pieces. Some were taken for permanent display in Museums and Galleries. Andamiyo is a very quiet young man who speaks with a low confidant voice. He loves to carve springstone, opal, cobalt and fruit serpentine. Among other artists he likes and admires the works of Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Henry Munyaradzi, Edronce Rukodzi and Bernard Matemera just to mention a few. With the improvement in his art he looks forward to holding exhibitions and workshops in different countries and meeting new people.
